Isabel got her first car today. It is a 1993 Jeep, Barbie, Beach Cruiser. It is in good condition with minimal wear and tear, and the tires are good. I could not tell how many miles were on it since there is no odometer but, overall it appears to be a reliable mode of transportation.
It was saved from the fate of going to the Wise Old Trash Heap. All it needed was a battery and some TLC. I have it hooked up at half speed 2.5 mph, but with another battery it is designed to do 5 mph on 12 volts. No 88 miles per hour for this time traveler.
It is pretty slow and safe. However there is an online community of people who soup these things up. Get them running on 24 volts, switch out the motors and have them going at a top speed of just under 10 mph!
I think I will wait until she has the basics down first, you know accelerate out of the turns, not into them, drafting and how to pass on the outside without hitting the wall. Then I can step her up into a higher racing class. Next thing you know she'll be in a gas powered go-kart.
Maybe a couple shinny LED tail and head lights wouldn't hurt. If you want to see some mods others have done Click Here. I like the Harley video myself.
The video below shows her first efforts as a safe driver, "Look Dad, No Hands!"
